On Tuesday 12th November 2013 Otley became the first Business Improvement District market town in the whole of West Yorkshire.
Throughout October Otley business owners took part in a secret postal ballot to vote on whether Otley should become a Business Improvement District (BID). The ballot closed on Monday 11th November and, following a count by the Ballot Holder, Leeds City Council, it was confirmed that Otley BID Ltd can now be established. The company will commence on 1st April 2014.
In total 42% of Otley businesses responded to the ballot and 78% voted yes.
We are absolutely delighted at the result and we are already working on a selection of projects that we are planning to be live by the start of the BID year. One of the projects is a directory which will list every business within Otley enabling other businesses, residents and visitors alike to be aware of and utilise the services that are available within the town, thus encouraging Otley money to be re-circulated within the town #ShopLocal
The next stage in the process is to appoint a board of directors for the newly formed Otley BID Limited. We are looking for 6-12 Otley business owners across a variety of different sectors to act as facilitators to the projects outlined within the Business Plan. Any interested parties should email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West commented: "The Otley BID will bring innovation to our area and benefits to our community - not just local businesses. Otley is now on the map, we have shown the community and the country that we are open for business. Finally, a big well done to everyone involved. It's great to see a scheme implemented that the community, and I, have backed since applications for the Portas Pilots were first launched in early 2012."
To give you a summary of what we stand for, Otley BID is an investment scheme where local businesses can agree on priorities for Otley. As a partnership we would decide how funds raised can be spent to improve our beautiful town, thus benefiting all businesses, employers, residents and visitors alike. Ultimately we would like every business within Otley to support this much needed, positive scheme.
